“Everyone proud in the heart is an abomination to the Lord; though they join forces, none will go unpunished. Proverbs 16: 5 (NKJV).
Pride simply means feeling superior, arrogant, pompous, and disdainful. Pride can also mean a feeling of happiness or pleasure derived from one’s achievement or someone else’s achievement. The pride that God hates is arrogance and feeling pompous. This pride is a sin and disobedience to God and the Bible says that those people proud in their heart are an abomination to God and will not go unpunished. Pharaoh was a prideful man who thought he was capable of everything and could be like God, he refused to surrender to God’s command of letting the people of Israel go. God hardened his heart and sent different plagues and up until the death of firstborns to Egypt before Pharaoh finally humbled himself, heeded God, and let the Israelites go. Proverbs 8:13 tells us ‘The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate’. Being humble is evidence that we fear God, this means that the proud have no fear of God and also disobey God’s commandments. Other proud people in the Bible ended up being punished, like King Nebuchadnezzar, and King Saul. It is important that as children of God, we humble ourselves before God and even before men instead of being proud, as God loves the humble-hearted and hates the proud.
