SIMPLE INSTRUCTION

SIMPLE INSTRUCTION

THE SEED

“You are free to eat from any tree in the garden, but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” Genesis 2: 16- 17 NIV

God gave Adam and Eve a simple instruction in the Garden of Eden, but the enemy convinced them to do otherwise. When the serpent came, none of them remembered the simple instruction, “But you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” God was merciful enough to let them know the consequences of their disobedience, which was death. This is likened to a woman whose husband took her to the city from the village, a transformed life from poverty to a better place. Everything she needed had been provided for her by her husband. The husband gave one simple instruction: “Do not have close friends that will be teaching you things; make me your best friend.” She ignored this instruction and befriended a particular woman whom she met on her usual way to her children’s school. They started helping each other to drop off or pick up children, and later the friendship moved to spending weekend outings with this friend. The friend took her places, which eventually made her change her behaviour at home and led to the collapse of her marriage. For any willful disobedience, death is usually the outcome: death of a marriage, of good living, of a healthy body succumbing to some diseases, of good relationships, etc. At times, when we are fortunate enough to hear such simple instructions, it is helpful to keep them close to our hearts and write them somewhere. You will see them as a constant reminder as advised in the Book of Proverbs “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction, and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.”
