“And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.” – Numbers 20:10–11 (KJV)
The incident at the waters of Meribah remains one of the most sobering lessons in Moses’ life. Though he was known as a humble servant of God, his uncontrolled anger caused him to disobey God’s clear instruction. It was not wrong for Moses to feel upset at Israel’s constant rebellion, but his anger led him to act rashly, and that single act cost him dearly. This teaches us that anger, when left unchecked, can push us to sin against God. No matter how provoked we may feel, God holds us responsible for our actions. Others’ behaviour must never dictate our obedience. The wisdom of Scripture reminds us that a person with understanding controls their anger, while an uncontrolled temper leads only to folly.
