How can we tell when the Lord is working? Sometimes we see a dramatic event, like when the Red Sea parted for the Israelites. Sometimes it looks like God isn’t doing anything, like when Jesus put off going to see the sick brother of Mary and Martha (John 11:3-6). The Holy Spirit is a gift from our Father that enables us to perceive His presence and creation. But because the Lord works according to His timeline and not ours, identifying God’s work also needs patience. Remember that Abraham had to wait until both he and his wife were past childbearing age before Sarah became pregnant with the child that God had promised. I think you’ll find that the Lord’s efforts are worthwhile of your patience. When Hannah gave birth to a child at last, she was ecstatic (1 Samuel 1:27–28, 1 Samuel 2:1) In order to support his family, Joseph was eventually promoted to a position of responsibility, but only after being wrongfully sold into slavery and imprisoned. Jesus explained to the disciples that both He and His Father were constantly working. We will be encouraged and strengthened in our faith as we become aware of how God is at work.
