DO NOT DISRESPECT YOUR PARENTS

"When he drank some of the wine, he got drunk and uncovered himself inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his fatheraas nakedness and told his two brothers who were outside. Shem and Japheth took the garment and placed it on their shoulders. Then they walked in backwards and covered up their fatheraas nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so they did not see their fatheraas nakedness. (Genesis, Chapter 9, 21-23). Woodcut after a drawing by Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (German painter, 1794 - 1872) from my archive, published in 1877."

DO NOT DISRESPECT YOUR PARENTS

THE SEED

“When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside” Genesis 9:21-22 NIV

In the world, people have to earn your respect. But God commands us to honour our parents, whether we feel they deserve it or not. Isn’t it interesting that this is the first and only commandment of the ten, that comes with not one, but two promises?

No matter what they do, even when they have acted foolishly, the bible does not permit us to disrespect our parents. Our obedience to our parents should be subject to our obedience to God; we do not have to obey them if they are wrong. But we are not to disrespect them or treat them scornfully, nevertheless. There is more to this than we can treat here; I implore you to read the whole chapter. It appears Ham saw his father’s nakedness and told his brothers. But somehow Canaan, one of Ham’s sons, also got involved, hence the curse in verse 25. The moral of the story is our parents may not always get their decisions correct. And they may not be up to date with the changing world we live in. But under no circumstance, does God allow us to dishonour them. As parents who gave us life and nurtured us into adulthood, even if they didn’t do it very well, we must honour them. Honouring them demonstrates that we are remaining under authority and accountability to a physical parent, as well as a spiritual parent (God). For this, God says, it will go well with us, and we will live long upon the earth.

BIBLE READING: Genesis 9: 20 – 27

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, help me to always show the honour you expect me to have for my parents, in all situations,  in Jesus name, Amen.
