“Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain and pitched his tent even as far as Sodom. But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the Lord” Genesis 13: 13 -14, NKJV
We must surround ourselves with the right company. With the right set of people. We should actively cultivate friendships with people whose principles and values align with what we consider important. People that inspire and motivate us to be the best version of ourselves. This means Christians should seek to grow and strengthen their network of Christian friends that push us to be better Christians. Lot, unfortunately, surrounded himself with the very wrong crowd of people. It was excusable for him to move there and discover that the people of Sodom were not people that feared the Lord. Anybody can make a mistake. But even when he discovered this, he chose to remain there. He even betrothed his daughters to these wicked people (Gen. 19: 14). Maybe he thought he could change them. Unfortunately, life does not operate like that. People can only change when they recognize they need to change. Nobody can change anybody. As a consequence of this poor decision, he lost everything but his life. Imagine the scenario. He had to move away from Abraham because the land they were living in could not support his possessions and those of Abraham at the same time. But according to Genesis 19, he was living inside Sodom City in a house like everybody else. There were no flocks, herds or tents mentioned anymore. He didn’t have all the cattle and herdsmen we saw in Gen. 13: 5 – 7. He had lost it all. Bad companies can only lead to bad results. Surround yourself with the right people. And if you find you are amongst bad company, get out fast.

“Abrahamu sí jókò ní ilẹ̀ Kénáánì, Lot sí jókò ní ilẹ̀ àgbègbè ni, o sí pagọ rẹ̀ de Sódómù. Ṣùgbọ́n àwon ọkùnrin Sódómù ṣé ènìyàn búburú, ati ẹlẹṣẹ gidigidi níwájú Olúwa”. Genesisi 13 : 12-13.
A gbọdọ fi àwọn ènìyàn tí o tọ yí ara wa ká. Pẹlu awọn eniyan tí o ṣé e fi ọkàn tán. Ó yẹ ki á máa bára wa ṣ’ọ̀rẹ́ pẹ̀lú àwọn èniyàn tí ìlànà àti ìṣe sí wọn bá ohun ti a kà sí pàtàkì mu. Awọn eniyan ti o ṣe iwuri ati iruni sókè fun wa lati jẹ ohun ti a julọ fún ara wa. Eyi tumọ si pe awọn kristeni yẹ ki o wa lati dagba ati láti ni ìtàn kalẹ̀ ìbádore ti o lagbara pẹ̀lú awọn Kristẹni ti o jẹ́ ọ̀rẹ́ wọ́n, ti yio mu wá sún mọ́ awọn Kristẹni ti o dara julọ. O ṣé ni laanu, pe Loti yi ara rẹ ka pẹlu ọpọlọpọ eniyan ti ko tọ. Ó jẹ́ àwíjàre fún un láti lọ sí ibẹ̀, kí ó sì rí i pé àwọn ará Sodomu kìí ṣe ènìyàn tí ó bẹ̀rù Oluwa. Ẹnikẹni le ṣe aṣiṣe. Ṣugbọn nigba ti o ṣe awari eyi, Lọti yan lati wa nibẹ! Ó tilẹ̀ fẹ́ àwọn ọmọbìnrin rẹ̀ fún àwọn ènìyàn búburú yìí (Jẹ́nẹ́sísì 19:14). Boya ni ọkàn rẹ̀ o ro pe oun le yi wọn pada. O ṣé ni laanu pe, igbe aye yi ko ri bẹẹ. Awọn eniyan le yipada nikan nigbati wọn ba mọ pé wọn nilo lati yipada. Ko si eni ti o le yi ẹlòmíràn pada! Bi abajade ipinnu búburú yii, Lọti padanu ohun gbogbo yàtọ̀ fún igbesi aye rẹ. Fi oju inu wo iṣẹlẹ naa. Ó ṣì kúrò lọ́dọ̀ Ábúráhámù nítorí pé ilẹ̀ tí wọ́n ń gbé kò lè ràn án lọ́wọ́ láti lé fi àyè gbà ohun ìní rẹ̀ àti èyí tí Ábúráhámù ní, ni àkókò kan náà. Ṣugbọn nínú Genesisi 19, o ngbe inu ilu Sodomu nínú ile bi gbogbo eniyan miiran. Ko si àwọn ẹran, agbo-ẹran tabi agọ ti a darukọ mọ ọ lara. Kò ní gbogbo ẹran-ọ̀sìn àti agbo ẹran tí a rí nínú Jẹ́nẹ́sísì 13:1-7 . O ti padanu gbogbo rẹ. Awọn ile-iṣẹ buburu le yọrí si awọn abajade buburu nikan. Yi ara rẹ ka, pẹlu awọn eniyan dáradára. Ati pe ti o ba wa laarin ile-iṣẹ buburu, jade ni ibẹ ni kankan!
