UNITY

THE SEED

“Endeavoring to keep the unity of the spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3 (KJV).

Unity is a state of being joined as a whole and this can be witnessed between a man and a woman in marriage, the unity of believers through the Holy Spirit and the ultimate unity among all believers through Jesus Christ. Unity is a divine gift that brings God’s success, growth and glory. This is not merely about conformity or uniformity, it is about harmony, mutual respect and love despite differences. The Apostle Paul’s letter to the Ephesians encourages us to make every effort to keep the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace. Unity is linked with peace and the Holy Spirit showing that it is not just a human endeavor but a spiritual one. The bible also warns against disunity. Unity in Christendom is fundamental to the health, effectiveness and success of the Church. Unity strengthens the church and enables it to withstand all challenges. In the book of Acts, the early church is described as having one heart and soul. This unity was their strength, enabling the Christians to spread the gospel effectively despite severe persecution. You cannot be in unity, if you are jealous and selfish which results in disorder and division. As children of God, we need to watch it though. However, unity is not just about strength in numbers, it is about reflecting the character of God. His teachings are about avoiding disunity and actively pursuing unity.
